National Delegate Conference 15-18 June
2010
Challenging the cuts myths and lies
|
Jane Carolan

Spreading the burden evenly? For the Tories, that might mean
the moat gets cleaned less often!
That was how Jane Carolan of the NEC described government claims
that the pain of any cuts will be shared.
Opening the keynote debate on the economy, she talked of all
the myths and outright lies that have been spread about the financial
crisis and who is to blame for it, but noted: "The most repellant
lie is that the cuts are inevitable."
Conference agreed a wide-ranging strategy building on the million
voices campaign to oppose the right wing agenda of cuts, privatisation
and deregulation, which would exacerbate further hardship.
It will continue to advocate and develop an alternative agenda
based on fairness, good jobs, quality public services and the
strengthening of democratic regulation and control of our economy.
It will campaign for fairer and effective taxation, including
local taxation and will build alliances to promote this agenda
nationally with the TUC, STUC, ITUC and WTUC, and internationally.
It also called for branches to get fully involved in the campaign.
