National Delegate Conference 15-18 June
2010
United to defend our NHS
Let's be united about defending the NHS, Clare Williams told
delegates as she opened a passionate debate on defending the National
Health Service.
Conference heard dire tales of the threat to the NHS in England
pledged to continue UNISON's well established policy of opposing
and resisting privatisation, marketisation and the fragmentation
of the NHS in England and to press for an integrated health care
service, especially in the current economic climate.
Although Scotland and Wales have opted to move away from the
private sector, the themes still apply and there is a need for
constant vigilance.
A move by Tower Hamlets to press for PFI schemes to be brought
back into full public ownership with only limited compensation
had already been defeated at Health Conference.
Conference recognised that this could not be achieved within
legal restraints and that it deflected from the main issues in
the motion.
They responded to Northern Regions Clare Williams, call to move
forward with unity across the union and voted it down again.
