National Delegate Conference 16-19 June
2008
DENIS GOLDBERG
THE MISSION: A Life for Freedom in South Africa
Denis Goldberg came to Conference to receive honorary UNISON
membership.
Denis, one of the Rivonia trialists along with Nelson Mandela,
served 22 years in an apartheid prison. Following his release
he worked for the ANC in exile and with the ending of apartheid
he founded the charity Community HEART (Health Education and Reconstruction
Training) to assist in the building of the new South Africa.
He returned to South Africa as adviser to the Minister of Water
Affairs.
In 2009 Denis was awarded the Order of Luthuli in Silver (OLS)
by the President of South Africa recognising his contribution
in the struggle for freedom in South Africa.
In this memoir, Denis writes about the often painful road to
freedom, about the joy of love and death, human dignity, political
passion, comradeship, conflict between comrades.... and a very
long imprisonment.

Denis has been a good friend of UNISON Scotland and came to Glasgow
in April to launch his book. Of Scotland he said, “after being
released from prison,my goodness, it was like being at home, of
being enfolded by people wanting to help. Which is why I am here
today”.
