UNISON is to raise its game to ensure climate change policy is
put into action and will work with employers to achieve a low
carbon economy.
UNISON will assess the impact of new climate control measures
on the various sectors, examine the scope for green collar jobs
across the various sectors, and develop the role of environmental
representatives.
Kevin Duguid, City of Edinburgh, speaking to a composite from
the branch and the NEC, warned that climate change is the most
significant threat facing the world today and it requires action
now.
He highlighted the role the trade unions have to play in driving
forward green policies. "We are rightly proud of the influence
we have had on policy making and the ongoing work that we are
involved in.
“But we must push on! We must continue to be at the forefront
of educating members and employers alike, and ensure that the
transition to a low carbon economy is regarded as an opportunity
for a positive move towards the creation of green collar jobs
not an excuse for job cuts."
Miranda Jacques-Turner, Scottish Water, said "I support a number
of charities, not least of all Water Aid. “I always say there's
no point supporting other charities, such as building a school
in a developing country, if the children can't go to school because
they have to collect water, or if they are dying and don't even
reach school age.
“But climate change is the one issue that must come before all
others. “If we don't have a habitable planet, there's nothing
else to fight for".
