UNISON slams child poverty
|
Brian Smith |
Conference endorsed an anti-poverty strategy aimed at tackling
low pay amongst UNISON members and tackling the causes and effects
of child poverty in this country and gobally.
Brian Smith, Glasgow, in a passionate speech, called poverty and
inequality a "scar on the planet." He urged conference to recognise
the main causes of poverty - power and wealth concentrated in a
small number of hands, the economic profit imperative and the exploitation
of young people and workers.
"We need to challenge big business and capitalism, to promote a
culture of needs over profit and co-operation over competition.
We need to benefit the millions not the millionaires," he said.
Tom Clark, South Lanarkshire slammed the disgrace of child poverty
in this country and paid tribute to UNISON welfare for the work
they do to combat its worst effects for our members.
