Conference agreed a raft of measures, to address the
threat of the Welfare Reform Act and Universal Credit,
including mobilising and organising around the issue,
and intensifying the campaign by informing MPs, councillors,
MSPs and AMs about the potential impact of the plans.
It welcomed the decision by the Scottish Parliament
to reject these reforms and to legislate where they can
to mitigate the worst effects of the Act.
Supporting the composite, Scottish Service Group Executive
member Mark Ferguson told delegates that the “ConDem
government is forcing through these changes by demonising
claimants, most of whom are the most vulnerable members
of our community
“We must also ensure full consideration of the
needs of disabled staff and service users”
Mark promised to work across UNISON with Regions and
Branches and establish a wide ranging network to try
to secure a strong local delivery of universal credit.
Scotland’s Scott Donohoe said that the welfare
reform proposals will have a significant impact on members
jobs, terms and conditions and the services they provide
to vulnerable claimants.
We need to organise our members now and make sure that
advice, guidance and adequate resources are provided
to the devolved nations to help them to meet the threat.
