UNISON will expose privatisation as nothing more than
an attempt to cut costs and divert public funds into
private profits. It will build on the lessons of campaigns
which have successfully opposed privatisation and will
work to develop alternatives to privatisation.
City of Edinburgh’s Duncan Smith told how his
branch had linked with the public and community groups
and had successfully fought off a major threat of privatisation
of council services.
“Through public meetings, lobbying and canvassing
councillors in their surgeries, we managed to split the
SNP from their Lib-Dem partners to vote with Labour and
the Greens against privatisation,” said Duncan.
“We managed to get people in their communities
on our side. They didn’t like privatisation and
told their councillors so,” he said.
“Privatisation can be beaten.”
