Workplace practices should put environmental
issues at the top of the agenda and ensure that
where changes are being proposed, a full risk assessment
takes place to consider the potential for impact
on the environment.
Supporting a motion from the Society
of Chiropodists & Podiatrists, Fiona Smith of UNISON's
NEC told congress that UNISON has long been committed
to sustainable development and protecting the environment.
"UNISON members want to do more on
climate change in their workplaces," said Fiona.
"That is why UNISON has launched
an Environmental Manifesto, which includes an action
plan for members.
"UNISON Scotland is also a members
of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland and campaigns for
the elimination of fuel poverty, for the local sourcing
of food for good, and for the boosting of renewables
in a balanced energy policy. We also support proper
facilities time for environmental reps."
Fiona welcomed the call for full risk
assessments based on environmental and carbon audits,
and called for trade union involvement in the progressing
of environmental decisions.
"Only by doing this can the full benefits
of workplace action on climate change be realised."
