The 'Two Ticks' Disabilty symbol which
should ensure that accredited employers support
the recruitment of disabled people is being flouted.
The STUC is now to press the Department
of Work and Pensions to monitor compliance with
the scheme and will collate information on how it
is working in practice.
UNISON's Julia McIlahatton told delegates
that for many of the organisations who attain the
two ticks symbol it is a paper exercise.
"Members and stewards in these
organisations will verify that even though the policies
and procedures are in place to attain the symbol,
the practices ar not", she said.
"Colleagues with disabilities
are not shortlisted and do not get the same training
or promotion opportunities, leaving many on the
lower end of the salary scale", she said, adding
that many still have to deal with a lack of understanding
in the workplace of their disability and health
issues.
Julia called for an external awarding
body to place the attainment of the 'two ticks'
symbol at the same level as other quality standards.
