Japanese Working Women visit UNISON
Ms Shizuko Koedo, WWN International Affairs Manager and Toshie
Habu, of the Working Women's Network (WWN) of Japan visited
UNISON on the 21 August.
They saw how the Pay Equality Group - primarily those based
in Edinburgh's Belford Road - was working to assist regional
officers, secretaries and branches in processing the high
volume of equal pay claims currently underway in Scotland.
From conversing with members on the phone to liaising with
Thompson's solicitors or lodging claims with the Employment
Tribunal, the team are vital in processing the information
that will be used to support members' claims for back pay
and as part of the ongoing negotiations across the country.
The WWN was established by the employees of the Sumitomo
Manufacturing Corporations established this Network in Osaka,
Japan in 1995.
They took their employers to court to rectify the discriminatory
pay structure between women and men. See page 2 for more on
the Pay Equality Support Group.
