"No Slavery! No Racism!" - STUC St Andrew's Day Demonstration

by Kevin O'Neil

The STUC is calling on all trade unions, civic and community groups, political parties, public authorities and the media in Scotland to support and promote the Annual St Andrew's Day Event against Racism and Fascism on Saturday 24 November.

The event started out as a counter demonstration to right wing racists from the National Front, who tried to use 'Scotland's Day' to promote their own racist agenda.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the slave trade in the UK, the theme for this year's event is "No Slavery! No Racism!".

The march will start at 11am at Blythswood Square (assembling at 10:30am) and will close with a celebration at the Glasgow Film Theatre. The event will include guest speakers, live entertainment, food and beer stalls and solidarity and craft stalls.

The STUC are looking for stewards to assist at the march and rally. If you can help, please contact Kevin O'Neil on 0845 355 0845 k.oneil@unison.co.uk.

If you are coming along then please pay a visit and support the UNISON Scotland stall.

UNISONScotland continues to be at the forefront of combating racism and fascism and has had a presence at two multicultural festivals this year.

At the Glasgow Mela on 17 June we had a stall with our Many Cultures Working in UNISON and Asylum Myths promotional materials.

The Edinburgh Mela from 1-2 September in the capital's Pilrig Park, saw UNISON Scotland staff and activists distribute our anti racist materials. The Edinburgh Mela is Scotland's biggest multi cultural festival with over 40,000 people passing through on both days.

We were also joined by staff and volunteers from Show Racism the Red Card who distributed some of their educational materials.

You will find further details of UNISON's anti-racist work on the at www.unison-scotland.org.uk and click on anti-racism under campaigns.
