Joint work creates "The Big Gay Prom"

UNISON's LGBT group and our Young Members Committee are coming
together along with outside organisations Glasgay! and LGBT
Youth, to organise a spectacular night in the annual Glasgay!
festival on 9 November at St Andrew's in the Square.
Based on the concept of the American School Prom, Glasgay!
has subtly changed the emphasis of its annual ceilidh to create
"The Big Gay Prom". Taking its inspiration from American high
school culture where gay and lesbian teenagers often feel
excluded by overtly heterosexual ceremonies 'The Big Gay Prom"
provides a community celebration and focus for love, togetherness
and harmony.
Alongside Belle Star Ceilidh band there will be Stretch Limos,
Red Carpet Arrivals, A Welcoming Committee, Paparazzi and
a special performance demonstration from Carrie's Angels,
the cheerleaders just back from hell.
Elaine Duffy,The LGBT representative on the Communications
and Campaigns committee said, "UNISON has been a long term
supporter of Glasgay! and when the opportunity arose for us
to involve members and activists in a more direct way, we
felt it was a good opportunity. We have been successful in
getting GPF funding and we are looking forward to the event."
Carrie Bell, Chair of the Young Members Committee, said
"When we became aware that our partner organisation was LGBT
Youth, it seemed an ideal opportunity to continue the working
relationship that the Young Members Committee has already
established with them."
UNISON will be involved in arranging display and handout
material, organising photographs and competitions, and will
provide the 'Prom Cake' to be presented on the night. Our
advert is prominent in the programme.
Activists will be around to ensure that UNISON material is
prominent and to help with the 'Prom King and Queen' competition!
