Young Scot award for UNISON activist
UNISON Shetland Branch's Young Members' Officer has won an
award in the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards.
He won the health section for his tireless efforts to improve
mental health services for young people and his dedicated
volunteer work.
Daniel works for the Shetland Charitable Trust. He was nominated
by his work colleague and UNISON branch treasurer Stefanie
Pottinger.
The judges were most impressed by his efforts in getting
a mental health website up and running. Called Talking2Ourselves,
it gives information to young folk who are, or have been,
experiencing mental health problems.
Daniel said, "We could have done anything we wanted with
the money from the NHS, but the group thought we should do
a website because it would never go out of date and is one
of the easiest ways to get in touch with young folk."
In UNISON he is on the Scottish Young Members' Committee
and their representative on the National Young Members' Forum
and the Communication and Campaigns Committee. He has only
been a member of UNISON since November and has already become
heavily involved with the work of the Union.
Daniel is also on a string of committees and was vice-chairman
of the NHS organizing committee for the first young people's
health conference last year. He is now working on next years
conference. The awards were handed out at a glittering ceremony
held in Glasgow. GMTV weather girl Andrea McLean hosted the
event. Don't forget to check out the website. Daniel welcomes
all your comments.
