Asylum seekers children campaign update
We reported progress in the campaign for rights for asylum
seekers' children in the last the last issue of SiU.
Now civil servants have outlined some timescales which will
be reported to UNISON's Social Work Issues Group.
Talks are already under way regarding a lead professional
for each child and early involvement for asylum seeker children
and a review of the removals process has already started.
Enhanced disclosure checks (vetting) for all immigration
staff contacting children is under way. An independent inspection
of services to children is also under way.
Legislation is to go through Westminster to allow independent
inspections of removals processes. An immigration director
for Scotland has been appointed and a Community Relations
post has started.
UNISON is still campaigning for An amnesty for asylum seekers
and for the government to give children their rights under
the UN Convention. We are also in talks with other organisations
to consider an action group.
