UNISON backs Gaza Medical Aid Appeal
UNISON’s Scottish Council is to donate to Medical Aid for
Palestinians' Gaza appeal, and is calling on branches to
do likewise. And it condemned the BBC and Sky for not airing
the Disasters Emergency Committee Gaza Appeal.
City of Edinburgh Branch’s John Stevenson told a packed
Scottish Council, “The humanitarian crisis in Gaza arises
from the actions of Israel and the failure of the international
community to act to achieve a fair, just and peaceful settlement
for the Palestinian people in terms of an independent Palestinian
state with the right of refugees to return as outlined in
the Oslo Accord.
“As well as responding to this human tragedy, we need to
do what we can to carry on the support for our Palestinian
trade union colleagues, using UNISON links in the region
to promote civil society dialogue and the peace process”,
added John.
An STUC delegation including UNISON Scotland Convener Mike
Kirby will visit the middle east at the beginning of March
and will report back on the call for a boycott of Israeli
