Lobby MSPs for Scotland to lead the world on climate change
by Fiona Montgomery, Info and Devt Officer
This year is a crucial one on climate change and UNISON
activists are being asked to lobby MSPs for a strong Bill.
United Nations talks in Copenhagen in December are due
to agree a successor to Kyoto. The stronger we make the
Scottish Climate Change Bill, the better, as it could then
influence other countries and the talks.
The Bill was introduced in the Scottish Parliament in December
and is now being scrutinised by MSPs. Members are asked
to email their own eight MSPs, and, if possible to also
set up a visit to one or more of them, especially if they
are on the Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change
Committee.
Scottish Organiser Dave Watson urged: “Climate change already
affects the lives of millions of people and if the world
doesn’t act this year on strong, international legally binding
emissions cuts, we risk dangerous runaway climate change.
“Please take the time to contact your MSPs.” The UNISON
Scotland website has an easy ‘click to email your MSPs’
page’ at: www.unison-scotland.org.uk/greenworkplace.
You can find out there who your MSPs are and the names of
Transport, Infrastructure & Climate Change Committee members.
The page lists UNISON Scotland’s four main ‘asks’ for the
Bill and four ways to push for them.
These include supporting the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland
rally and lobby of MSPs, outside the Scottish Parliament
on 22 April, 11am-2pm.
