President praises Scotland
UNISON National President, Sue Highton, has praised UNISON
Scotland for ‘punching above its weight’ at UK level in
the union.
Speaking at the union’s Scottish Council of branches, she
pointed to past presidents John McFadden and Nancy Coull,
past NEC member Ina Love, Vice-president Angela Lynes, Policy
Chair Jane Carolan, Finance Vice-chair Fiona Smith, Health
Chair Lilian Macer and Mike Kirby, “UNISON’s convenor of
convenors” - all playing a vital role in the national union.
Sue slammed the government’s pay limits and commended UNISON’s
statement on the credit crunch, blaming the ‘greed’ that
had created the problem.
“Public services available to all on the basis of need”
were a the key to the future and to the recovery.
Sue also called for a concerted campaign against the BNP
with their “message of hate masked by so-called concerns
for communities.”
Sue’s presidential charity is the African Heart Foundation
project, a charity which funds heart operations for people
across Africa.
