Young Members and LGBT to deliver another UNISON first?
by Andrew Burns UNISON Scotland LGBT Group
UNISON Scotland's Young Members' and LGBT committees are
working jointly to achieve the Charter Mark awarded by LGBT
Youth Scotland.
This sets a benchmark for the mainstreaming of equal rights
for LGBT people and provides a mechanism by which organisations
can ensure that they are meaningfully engaging with, and including
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people.
Carrie Bell, chair of the Young members' committee said,
"As UNISON are the first trade union to register for this
Charter Mark, LGBT Youth Scotland are using our distinctive
approach as a case study so they can highlight the many different
ways in which organisations can approach equality and diversity
issues."
Over the next few months the two committees will work through
their plans to fulfil the criteria and achieve Charter Mark
status for UNISON Scotland. This work includes developing
training and resources to be made available for branches to
train and support activists and lay members alike.
The tools that are developed will also prove useful in our
fight against inequality in the workplace.

in UNISON.
