Caroline 'a member's person' retires
North Lanarkshire's John Barton embarrasses activist Caroline
Llewellyn
Respected UNISON activist Caroline Llewellyn has announced
her retirement as a Centre Supervisor from North Lanarkshire
Council. This means she as also standing down as Branch Secretary.
Caroline joined local government in 1978 and became a shop
steward in 1980. She has have never stopped fighting for our
members and all workers in the struggle over the years.
Caroline has been a trade unionist all her working life and
became a shop steward in a factory at the age of 19.
From being a branch secretary with the former NUPE trade
union through to UNISON, Caroline has been involved at every
level of the movement from branch to Scottish and national.
Caroline proved a committed internationalist.
From her time as vice chair on UNISON Scotland's International
Committee, her main passion on the international front remains
Cuba. Caroline's vision is to see Cuba take its rightful place
in the world free from all US embargos.
For those of us who know Caroline we are agreed, she is a
member's person. She always holds the principle that we have
a duty to protect the interests of all the members of UNISON
- manual or staff, part-time or full-time, male or female,
black or white, and if the Council touch one of us the rest
of UNISON must defend that one member.
For Caroline, that is what trade unions are all about and
that principle must be remembered at all times.
On behalf of all our members we thank you Caroline for your
commitment not only to UNISON but also to the wider trade
union movement.
Be healthy and happy in your retirement.
