Rally of support for Nursery Nurses
UNISON, the union representing Scotland's local authority nursery
nurses, today announced that there will be a major rally of support
for striking nursery nurses in Glasgow on Saturday.
The Rally is taking place on Glasgow Green on Saturday 13 September
between 1.00pm and 5.00pm, and will feature supporting speeches
from a cross party group: Margaret Jamieson MSP (Lab); Shona Robison
MSP (SNP); Elspeth Attwooll MEP (ScotLibDem); Carolyn Leckie MSP
(SSP) and Patrick Harvie MSP (Green). Other support will come from
local film actor Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot and Gangs of
New York) and STUC General Secretary Bill Speirs. The day will
also feature stalls, bouncy castles, and entertainment for kids
to encourage parents and other supporters to attend.
Carol Ball, Chair of the Nursery Nurses Working Group said
"We have organised this rally and family day to give parents and
other trade unionists the opportunity to show their support for
our fight. We have received tremendous support for our action from
our fellow trade unionists and from the parents of the children
in the nurseries. This is both an opportunity for that to be displayed
and a small attempt to say thanks for the support already received"
UNISON, along with other unions will be meeting employers CoSLA
on the eve of the rally - Friday 12 September. At this meeting it
is expected that an offer will be tabled by CoSLA, based on the
report of a technical working group already condemned by UNISON
as "flawed".
