INEQUALITY FOR ALLTake One Action film festival 2014 Inequality for All
THEMES: Arts & Media (in social change), Economics, Fair Trade & Labour
REGION/COUNTRY FOCUS: North America | United States
PRODUCTION: Jacob Kornbluth | 2013 | 90 min | English
FEATURING: Robert Reich

Does inequality matter? Arguments against its corrosive effects rarely come as cogently and powerfully expressed as in this rousing exposé.

Robert Reich, who served in the Ford, Carter and Clinton administrations, charts the history of America’s rich/poor divide and argues the status quo is not sustainable. But this is not just an American story: the UK is one of the most unequal countries in the developed world, with the five richest families now having more wealth than 20% of the population. What are the root causes of inequality and what can we do about it?

SALT OF THE EARTHTake One Action film festival 2014 Salt of the EarthTHEMES: Activism/People Power, Economics, Fair Trade & Labour, Human Rights
REGION/COUNTRY FOCUS: North America | United States
PRODUCTION: Herbert J. Biberman | 1954 | 94 min | English (English subtitles)

Banned for a decade in the US , this pioneering agitprop drama traces the story a mine-workers’ strike against so-called “austerity measures".

When a debilitating accident befalls a New Mexican zinc miner as a result of safety cutbacks, Mexican and US miners alike decide to withdraw their labour. But it is only when the workers’ wives get involved – bringing a moving and lyrical definition to solidarity – that the balance of power painfully starts to shift.

Featuring mainly real-life miners and their families, Salt of the Earth remains a fresh and rousing call for on-going non-violent resistance in the face of consumer and corporate exploitation.

About Take One Action:

Take One Action is Scotland’s global action cinema project - linking audiences, movies, campaigners and communities to inspire shared responses to issues of global concern.

Take One Action takes audiences beyond the screen. They make global issues and positive action against the root causes of poverty accessible to thousands of ordinary people each year. And they celebrate great film.

Take One Action's programme is developed by film lovers, artists and socially-committed volunteers and professionals based in Scotland who believe that cinematic experiences can inspire change at the highest and deepest levels.

Since 2008, we have engaged more than ten thousand people with hundreds of world-class films that comment on issues of global concern.

From rare and reimagined screenings to UK and Scottish premieres… through debate, Q&As and workshops… our events bring together communities, filmmakers, politicians, businesses and artists, united by the simple desire to connect around common stories and shape their unfolding.
