SCOTTISH FURTHER EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT TO THE
SCOTTISH COUNCIL 16 APRIL 2011
Cuts
The biggest issue in Further Education is the budget
cuts. Further Education has been hit with a massive 10.4%
reduction in budget. There are redundancies across most
colleges and in many it is feared there will be compulsory
redundancies. It is thought that up to a 1/3 of staff
are at risk in some colleges.
Day of Action
The FE committee have organised lunchtime protests across
Scotland's Colleges on the 30th of
March.
Contact MSP
candidates We are running a letter writing campaign
to MSP candidates explaining the importance of FE to Scotland's
economy and trying to ensure that College budgets are
not slashed again. Recruitment Leaflet At the time of
writing this, we have applied for the FDO for funding
for a new FE specific leaflet. If branches with colleges
want any, please let us know.
Training Course
We are looking at running a 2 day training course in
May aimed at new and existing reps in Further Education.
This will include cuts training.
Newsletter
At the time of writing, we have applied to the FDO to
direct mail all members in Further Education with newsletter.
Its aim would be to keep our members up to date with what
is happening in Scotland's Colleges and also to encourage
more people to be active.
Survey
At the time of writing we are surveying all college employers
about the budget to gather information about how they
are managing the cuts.
