98% vote for UNISON in first voluntary sector recognition ballot

What is thought to be the first ballot on union recognition in Scotland carried out under the Government's new 'Fairness at Work legislation has resulted in a thumping victory for UNISON, and a further recognition victory has been won elsewhere in the voluntary Sector without a ballot.

The ballot of the staff of Enable Homes (Cumbernauld) run by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), resulted in a 98% 'YES" vote to recognise UNISON, and for the union to negotiate their pay and conditions.

Enable Homes runs residential accommodation for adults with learning difficulties in three homes in Cumbernauld, Condorrat and Kilsyth.

Initially UNISON was told by the management of the organisation that there was 'no interest' in union membership amongst the 80 or so staff.

John Lyons, UNISON's Regional Officer for the Voluntary Sector, said;

"This is an important and overwhelming victory. It goes to show that, even when staff are dedicated to the service they provide, they want a professional union to represent them.

"We will now be going back to the Enable Homes management and negotiating a full recognition agreement with UNISON."

Recognition agreed

The result is not only significant as the first successful recognition ballot in Scotland, but also because it has taken place in the voluntary sector. It looks like it also to be followed by recognition in the Glasgow Old Peoples Welfare Association, where the employers have agreed to recognise the union without the need for a ballot.

Boost

John Lyons said;
"As the main union in the sector, UNISON knows just how difficult it is to organise in the voluntary sector.
"These results are a tremendous boost for workers in the field, many of whom have been put off joining a union."
