EDUCATION AND TRAINING COURSES

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Below are detailed Education and Training Courses which have been available through the UNISON Scotland, Education and Training Committee and supported/developed with the Scottish Disabled Members Committee. Please check current courses available by clicking here.

'DISABILITY AWARENESS'

This Course is aimed at non disabled members to engender knowledge and understanding of what disability is and to challenge our attitudes, to help people become more aware and eradicate discriminatory practices.

The Course is based on the `Social Model' of Disability.

Following the Course, members and activists should be able to more quickly recognise issues with employers and seek improvements through the `Bargaining' Agenda.

`DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION ACT'

This Course is aimed at providing a knowledge of the Act opening up with an activity `What is Disability'. The Course uses the Social Model of Disability as supported by UNISON as opposed to the Medical Model which the DDA is based on.

The Course then concentrates on how to get Management to act. Employers have not yet fully realised the impact of the somewhat limiting DDA but it is a requirement that many members can use and will use this therefore it is important that activists who represent members either at Grievances or in Negotiating arenas are aware of the Act.

You will learn what is meant by `reasonable adjustments' and therefore use this knowledge to negotiate better arrangements for disabled workers.

`IN CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS'

This Course has been designed by the Scottish Education Committee and can be used by Branches to raise awareness of disability and other equality issues.

`LAW AT WORK'

This Course will include the impact of the Disability Discrimination Act in the Workplace but obviously will not be as detailed as the one dedicated to DDA.

`TRAINING/AWARENESS SESSION FOR NEW DELEGATES ATTENDING NATIONAL DISABLED MEMBERS CONFERENCE'

The Scottish Disabled Members Committee has organised a training/awareness session for new delegates attending the National Disabled Members Conference. The aim is to enable delegates to network, understand the procedures used toto debate Motions, how to move a Motion, the election process. Depending on demand, this has now become an annual event and will be adjusted in line with changes to the format of the Conference.

Branch Activists/Representatives are encouraged to attend all/some of the above as appropriate.
